Reviews for Hold On: Season 1 by Peter Darley

Cold Coffee Press Book Review: Hold On: Season 1 by Peter Darley

Author Peter Darley takes an amazing approach to his ‘Hold On’ Romantic Suspense Thriller Series. ‘Hold On’ is book one in the adult series and it is FREE to all readers who crave action, mystery, conspiracies, romance, science fiction and heart stopping thrills.

The author’s approach may be unorthodox, but it might be genius because after reading ‘Hold On’ I am convinced that you will want to purchase the next books in his trilogy.

Forty seven intense chapters introduce you to his two main characters Brandon (an AWOL soldier) and Belinda Reese (a corporate secretary for Carringby Enterprises). This book is set up in an easy to follow format with chapters that remind me of my favorite TV series episodes. I guess this is why the author lists his books as Season 1, 2, 3, etc. Well-developed characters along with a fast paced persuasive story line will keep you turning the page.

I personally love thrillers! My heart races and my mind turns to my favorite TV Heroes Steven Seagal and Bruce Willis as I find myself searching for clues that will allow me to accept Brandon Drake as the new empowered hero that brings his own experience, skills and gismos into a world filled with conspiracy and terrorism.

Let’s begin as Brandon Drake as he sits on the edge of his sofa. His thoughts beg him to stay in the comfort of this room where it is safe. Heroes never play it safe now do they?

The sign of a skilled action thriller writer is the ability to draw the reader into the action while offering a softer, more romantic interlude when action creates an adrenalin rush, death that may or may not be cheated, and an afterglow of pure animal attraction. Let me tease you with this quote: “The aircraft landed outside a wooden cabin deep within the snow-covered mountains. Belinda’s safety harness automatically detached itself and retracted into the seat. The side door slid upward, and she noticed they’d landed directly against the porch of the cabin. “I didn’t want you to be knee-deep in snow,” he said. Shaking, she reached out and eased herself onto the porch. “It’s dryer this way.” The stranger climbed across the passenger’s side to join her. She assumed he was trying to put her at ease by acting nonchalant. He walked across the porch and inserted a key into the cabin door. Belinda considered the sight somewhat bizarre—a tall, muscular man in black combat fatigues, and a sleek helmet with a reflective visor, acting so normal. She was instantly drawn to the vision before her. The moonlight shone down onto a valley of snow, creating a calming, hypnotic, purple-blue effect. It was a contender for the most beautiful sight she had ever seen, and such a dramatic contrast to that which had led her to it. He pushed the door open and stepped inside. “You’d better come in or you’re gonna freeze.” She turned around and cautiously followed him into the living room. Nothing about the interior registered with her.”

Are they safe in the Cabin? Will Belinda let her guard down? Is there more to Brandon than first impressions? Can life ever be normal again? Can you define normal?

Hold On – By Pride (UK)

It’s been awhile since I’ve added an AOR Hold On track to the blog.
This one is an epic rock ballad from UK AOR band, Pride’s 2001 debut album, Far From the Edge.
I consider this track a contender for the Hold On! movie’s end title theme.

Review: Belinda Reese was on her way out of the office when terrorists burst into the building and began shooting. Barely escaping discovery, she is rescued by handsome soldier Brandon Drake, and spirited away in an experimental test aircraft to his hidden cabin in the Aspen Mountains. To her surprise, Belinda finds that she cannot simply return home; Brandon is on the run from the government, and a rogue cell within it is attacking their own country. In order to prevent more attacks and to expose the terrorist conspiracy, Brandon and Belinda must trust each other and their budding love to save their country. But, as they do, they’ll discover that this conspiracy is more complex than they thought, with hidden consequences for Brandon.

An action movie in written form, “Hold On!” is nonstop running, hiding, fighting, with romance thrown in. Twists abound and the conspiracy never stops building. Some questions are answered while a few others are left to be cleared up in the sequel without leaving the reader feeling cheated. The main characters are complex in their history and hold their own in the book. The downside?  There is little character growth and the romance between them is almost instant due to the nature of their meeting. Also, the absolute lack of any person in any form of authority being portrayed as a good or even decent person seems to take the conspiracy a bit far. However, readers wanting high action with some steamy romance will enjoy this one.

Hold On: Season 1 Celebrity Review

(Five Stars)

“Three pages into Hold On by Peter Darley you forget you’re reading a novel and feel as if you are watching a TV show. Darley has created something rare in fiction: a romantic-thriller that is both heart racing and heart breaking. His lead character Brandon Drake is an enigmatic knot that only Belinda Reese and we, the lucky reader, can untangle.

The title Hold On is uttered when the main characters meet for the first time but it’s good advice for readers as well. Because once this fast-paced thrill ride starts – think the proverbial roller coaster sans safety bar and forget about the brakes – it doesn’t slow down.

Darley writes with great passion and heart and I can’t wait for the sequel.”

Hold On: Tomorrow’s First Ever Review

(Five Stars)

This came through 48 hours after Hold On! – Tomorrow was released . . . and it’s almost unbelievable. I swear on my life, I had nothing to do with this, and I have no idea who this person is:

“Hold On! – Tomorrow” has held my interest right from the very beginning. I haven’t been able to put it down! Continuing with Brandon’s offspring, this breathtaking, heartfelt story develops seamlessly with fast-paced action, unexpected twists and an awesome wrap-up of the “Hold On!” universe. The graphic feel of the action makes me wish I could enjoy the movie of these cinematic novels as much as I’ve enjoyed the books. Heinous villains, tough, honest, honourable bone-and-flesh heroes making the most of dark anti-hero backgrounds, adult, deep characters, military suspense, epic action spiced with humor and angst in just the precise doses, together with sci-fi/paranormal brush strokes make the entire “Hold On!” experience an incredible read, most recommended to the lovers of action-packed, imaginative fiction with a cinematic quality and a roller-coaster thrill. Peter Darley is, as of now, one of my favourite writers ever, together with John Connolly, among others. I can’t wait for the next novel by this wondrous writer!”

Book Review For Run: Hold On Season 3 (Action Thriller) by Peter Darley

The world believes Brandon Drake is dead, but he awakens in a secret government complex believing it to be 2012. The last four years of his life have been erased from his conscious mind. Only his true, malevolent self, The Scorpion, remains.

He soon finds himself dispatched on an assassination mission, but the mission fails as he is struck down by a debilitating pain in his head.

Before long, he discovers he’s been duped, and that four years have passed since his last memory. A bloodbath ensues as he escapes from the complex and sets out to find the truth about his missing years. He learns of a woman named Belinda Reese and associates her with his terrible pain. To be strong enough to destroy those who betrayed him, he sets out to kill Belinda, leaving a trail of death and destruction in his wake.

However, a mysterious figure wearing a black helmet appears to him in the darkness. He is the true cause of Drake’s pain: an adversary who identifies himself only—as The Interceptor.

Past, present, and future collide as the Hold On! Trilogy reaches its jaw-dropping conclusion.

CAUTION: This entry contains violent and adult themes.
Book Review:  RUN is the third installment in Peter Darley’s adult Hold On military suspense (slightly sci-fi/paranormal) series focusing on former soldier Brandon Drake.

NOTE: There may be some spoilers in my review if you have not read the previous installments.

Told from several third person perspectives RUN commences several weeks following the events of GO: book two wherein Brandon Drake is presumed dead following an explosion aimed at ending his life. At a secret government facility in the Mojave Desert Brandon is very much alive and unaware of the last four years of his life. The Brandon Drake we have come to love is no longer the Brandon Drake who awakens from a six week coma-he is a changed man; a man who has undergone a personality reassignment making Brandon one of the most dangerous men on the planet. While his former love grieves for what could have been, Brandon sets out to destroy everything that was and still remains in his life including the woman he can no longer remember.

Peter Darley’s RUN is the culmination of one man’s descent into H*ll and back; a former soldier whose entire life has been focused upon inflicting pain and suffering on anyone who stands between Brandon and his latest assignment. Brandon is a mercenary; a soldier for hire, whose earlier years of abuse and torture at the hands of his foster father, have shaped the beast known as The Scorpion. As The Scorpion Brandon is feared; a take no prisoners attitude whose aim is deadly with accurate results.

RUN is a storyline with graphic violence; an antihero whose murderous spree and the resulting carnage will claim numbers in the hundreds as the FBI, CIA and secret government divisions hunt for the man whose need for revenge is a promise not a threat.

Once again, RUN, like the previous installments, has a large ensemble cast of supporting and secondary characters including Brandon’s family who become one of Brandon’s primary targets. A good portion of the storyline is driven by the others: some with murderous intent; some with aspirations of ultimate global powers; and others who are hoping to survive another day.

The world building no longer focuses on Brandon Drake and Belinda Reese but on Brandon’s slide into the abyss. Several government agencies will go in search for Brandon but most will find themselves on the receiving end of Brandon’s need for vengeance and death.

RUN is a revealing, imaginative and suspense filled conclusion to Peter Darley’s HOLD ON series. The non-stop action finds Brandon Drake ferreting out his next victim with sensational and dramatic results; very few will survive a face to face meeting. Brandon Drake aka The Scorpion is the result of a government experiment gone horribly wrong; where mind control has yet to reach its zenith when love and emotions continue to war with what’s real, what’s unknown, and a mind previously destroyed by an abusive past.

OMG! When evil powerful people are in control, they can create major… messes! Poor Brandon Drake has gone through hell and is now back there! Would it have been better to leave him as he once was–a psychopath? Perhaps, because he probably would have already been dead…

Instead, one man, a Senator, had taken Brandon and had his brain revisioned. It did change him for the better, even though the Senator’s plan for him was quite different! But Brandon had seen what was going on and escaped and had full four years of being a kinder, gentler, and finally loving man…

With the Senator’s death, one of his own men eliminated the interim director of the special department within CIA and automatically became director! He wanted the psychopath back…so he could work for him…never realizing that The Scorpion was uncontrollable…

Well, it is confirmed that my favorite of the Trilogy is Go!; however, Run is an entirely different type with an ending that uniquely carried through on the theme originally started in Season 1… Readers will have the opportunity to learn much more about Brandon’s early life as well as his time in the military. Even the other soldiers were afraid of him, and his commander had taken an assault from him, without reporting it, because he considered him so valuable to the success of his unit…

The Scorpion felt he was invincible and in turn did just about anything he wanted!

As was his nature, Scorpion didn’t want to wait and escaped from the Mohave facility, killing everybody, including the only person, the doctor, who could have helped him…

Wilmot paired him with another formidable man and sent them on their first mission–to kill Jed Crane who had escaped but knew about what had been going on. There was no choice Crane must die… He was living in a favela in Brazil.

And that’s when the Interceptor returns! Readers will recall that when Brandon had been declared a hero, a comic had been developed, calling the hero Interceptor…You see, Wilmoth had not listened closely enough to the doctor who had returned Drake to a psychopath. That is, that the person he had become for four years would still be part of Drake’s memories! And when he was sent to kill Crane and found, instead a woman with whom Crane lived, he had changed when she begged for her life! Interceptor took over and prevented his killing her!

After having to be dragged out of the hovel where they’d learned Crane was living, Drake wanted to know just exactly what had happened and why he had been struck down, unable to perform… At the same time, Crane was coming home when they were leaving and snapped pictures of Drake, who was believed to be dead!

Soon the two–the Scorpion and the Interceptor were in battle! Best I can think about it would be to have an individual with multiple personalities, in this case two, fighting against each other, rather than taking over and coming out when the other didn’t know it. Whew! Just reading the rest of the story is an exciting battle like no other!

In order to learn how to rid himself of the Interceptor, the Scorpion went home to start learning about what had happened…leaving his father beheaded once he told him all he knew…

Readers watch the trail of bodies as the Scorpion searches… How does he get rid of the Interceptor? Kill the object of The Interceptor’s strong emotional feelings! Belinda Reese!

Belinda Reese and Emily, Brandon’s sister, are now living with Tyler and his father… Tyler has hooked up with Nikki who we met in the last book… and Tyler is helping to promote her new career as a singer…by investing in the music business, about which he knows nothing! His idea?! Add a glockenspiel to her band! Wish I could hear it! Quite a number of songs are included, as written by Nikki, so this side-plot was a fun addition to this extremely violent final novel in the trilogy.

You might say that the ending of this finale book wrote itself…it was inevitable and yet so poignantly done that you, the reader, will be satisfied… Highly recommended!

“Final Season of This Fast-Paced Thrill Ride.”

At the end of Season 2, Brandon Drake, The Interceptor, crashes in the air car, and is presumed dead. However, he awakes in a lab where Dr. Frederick DeSouza has wiped out his memory of the last four years, returning his personality of The Scorpion, a deadly killer without conscious. SDT Director Andrew Wilmot and Agent Cynthia Garrett lead him to believe it’s 2012, and Drake is assigned to them in Operation Nemesis.

Things don’t go as planned, as Belinda, Tyler, and Emily come back on the scene. But will The Scorpion kill them before they can return him to his personality of The Interceptor, a hero, not a killer? This third episode – or season – concludes the initial cliffhanger series, but to reveal any more would give away the ending. Needless to say, there is an ending of sorts, but the adventure doesn’t have to cease at this point, and that’s all I’ll say. If you like your action fast, the villains mean, and the heroes tough, you’ll like the “Hold On!” series, but be prepared to read all three seasons for the final battle between The Scorpion and The Interceptor. Highly recommended.

The Action Never Slows Down.

Twenty-six years after the death of Brandon Drake, his son B.J. dons the armor of The Interceptor. Brandon had died fighting his inner-self, The Scorpion, but now B.J. is called upon to resurrect Brandon’s good side, The Interceptor when an end-of-the-world cult, the Children of Tomorrow, cause worldwide disasters of apocalyptic horror.

The first three novels were written in Saturday Matinee cliffhanger style, each story ending with a thrilling cliffhanger (think Commando Cody). But this story is a stand-alone novel. Still, the novel is awash with the old matinee action and sudden danger to our hero and heroine. The suit is equipped with jets in the shoes, lasers in the hands, and robotic strength and speed. B.J. doesn’t have the hang ups that hampered his father’s Dr, Jeckle-Mr. Hyde (Interceptor-Scorpion) situation. Although he feels that his father is within him. This time the world must come together in support of The Interceptor if the planet is to survive, for this time the religious cult has technology on its side, and is as powerful as the world’s mighty superhero.

Call it comic book prose, or pulpy fiction, if you like, but this novel has the making of a good action movie, as well as a graphic novel series. In fact, we are told in the story that movies and comic books resulted from Brandon Drake’s earlier career. Plus we even have a song written for this latest book. And whatever you call the book, you have to admit there is never a slow down in the action. Highly recommended.

I love a good action series and you can’t beat this one from author Peter Darley. His first book introduced characters Brandon and Belinda, who became a couple and ended up running for their lives after becoming embroiled in an espionage scheme. In this second book, “Go! Hold On!”, Brandon had been captured and has now escaped from prison. He is emotionally scarred and battles these issues as he meets up again with Belinda, his long-lost brother and a sister he never knew he had. There is plenty of action and intense dialogue in this one, with a kidnapping and much more. Loved the read and can’t wait to get my hands on the next Season.

How I wish that my new uber-Hero was really alive and working to eliminate those in Human Trafficking…The world needs a man that moves right in, no matter who he’s confronting! Human Trafficking has got to stop! And in Go! Brandon Drake makes a major effort toward just that! First, let me remind you about an article I wrote some time ago suggesting to authors that, with a trilogy or series, they provide a overview of what happened in the previous book.. This author did just that–cool!–so now we are picking up where the last book left off. Brandon is confined to Leavenworth!

Of course, at that point, Brandon was not aware of his siblings, but as soon as he saw Tyler, who looked like Brandon, he accepted what he was being told! Even more reason to escape, besides getting back to his love, Belinda! Brandon succeeded in escaping, but was seen running and was shot… But Brandon wouldn’t let anything stop Tyler from finding Belinda and bringing her back to the Cabin…

Which included Tyler “dressing up” as Brandon and saving Belinda from the Feds!

Which he succeeded in doing; however, neither of the brothers had realized just how bad Brandon was from the shot and he had not been able to take care of himself while Tyler was gone, even to build up the fireplace… He turned to Gin to help keep him going… Once Tyler and Belinda made it back to the cabin, they found Brandon huddled in a blanket, nearly frozen… and delirious. They got him to his bed and Belinda immediately wrapped him with lots of covers while Tyler built a fire…

During his recuperation, they made plans to find exactly where Emily was. Emily had been a nun, having live in the Carmelite Convent since she was young… and had since been accepted into the Carmelite Life. After serving for quite some time and becoming a favored nun, she began to question whether or not she made made a mistake taking her final vows…After much thought, she asked to be permitted to leave…and was refused..

Soooo, she escaped! There is an indication that the Church knew about Brandon’s escape and that they had wanted to keep her safe inside the convent. However, from Emily’s perspective, she felt that she had lost her faith if she could not be free to act on her own, making decisions for her
life…

They were right…Emily did not understand the ways of today’s world…and soon was in the hands of a human trafficker! Can you image Emily being approached by a handsome man offering to help? And that’s how she was on her way, depending on a beautiful man, the first she’d seen outside of the convent for years…

At the same time, Belinda was trying to convince Brandon to spend more time resting and healing and holding off going for Emily… But he quickly explained that he needed to bring his family together. And Tyler had a plan…that would be very dangerous…he was going try to buy Emily…using his real name and notorious reputation as the very rich sexy playboy that he was… First Stop was the Citadel…

I think this second book might be my favorite of the trilogy, but since I’ve already started reading the third, I’ll withhold my final decision… Now, there is no doubt about it, the best is yet to come as Brandon finds that inner demon to fight against the criminal traffickers and free his sister!

What’s that you’re thinking? You’ve got to read this? Well, I totally agree because it’s part of my favorites this year–The entire Trilogy I am sure!

Once I’d gotten through the original ‘Hold On!’, I couldn’t wait to read this!

We pick up with Brandon Drake in Leavenworth federal military prison, Kansas, where he ended up as a result of events from the first book. But of course, he won’t be staying there long– I think that is pretty obvious! This new storyline brings in Brandon’s long lost brother, Tyler, who is a wealthy mogul. Tyler, a mover & shaker, makes things happen: including meeting some old people from Brandon’s past, finding some new ones (namely another previously unknown female sibling of theirs), but also fighting through personal demons that threaten to overwhelm Brandon.

All of the players soon find themselves in grave danger as their sister Emily, Brandon himself, and the others come to realize that they have enemies out to get them– to use them and then cast them aside once their goals have been met. The gravest danger is to the target of a conspiracy aimed at their new-found, then lost, sister of gyrating religious convictions, who is kidnapped– and now they Must rescue her.

We’ve got rogue government agents, the military, the CIA, human traffickers, kidnapping– this has it all and these various elements are woven together very nicely by Mr. Darley into once heck of a rip-roarin’ yarn!

The thing that makes this book is the people. The characters are caught up in an improbable situation, and come up with unique solutions to problems as they come up.

But the thing that really makes this book are the characters. They’re ordinary people caught up in extraordinary situations that push them to the edge, and from the beginning, I cared for them.

This is a book that kept me up late, (figuratively) turning pages.

There’s a surprise near the end, and that surprise leads you into the next book, but this book still finishes the story, if you don’t want to continue.
